Saints girls shut out Wolves to open season

The St. Peter Saints kicked off the Kawartha high school girls hockey season by defeating the Cobourg Collegiate Wolves, 8-0, in Cobourg on Tuesday. The Saints had seven different goal scorers led by Avery Johnston, with a pair, and singles by Emma Strano, Lauren Jeffrey, Kylee Strano, Bella Bowen, Sophie Fife and Davlen Rose. Assists went to Clara Williams, with three, Chloe Fife and Rhaea Flint, with two each, and one apiece to Lauren Jeffrey, Erica Greco and Bella Bowen. Goal- tender Kianna Van Horne was ex- cellent for the victorious Saints. The Fenelon Falls Falcons defeated the Lindsay Collegiate Spartans, 1-0. Jade Peterkin scored for Fene- lon assisted by Ryley Rae. Goal- tender Alicia Griffin recorded the shutout for Fenelon. Lindsay’s I.E. Weldon Wildcats beat St. Mary Thunder of Cobourg, 2-1. Scoring for Weldon were Keira Watson and Savannah Payne. Assists went to Payne and Emma Mulcaster. Scor- ing for St. Mary was Keira Martin asisted by Caitlin Stewart. “It’s great to get the Kawartha Varsity Girls league going again this sea- son,” said league convener Rod Mc- Gillis, assistant to Saints head coach Mike Martone. “The teams are ex- cited with the potential to go to COSSA and OFSAA champion- ships in March. We are looking for- ward to a great season for all the teams. There is something special about playing for your high school team.”
